Variable Open Dyslexic is an open-source font created to increase readability for readers with dyslexia.
VOD is a variable font designed to aid in reading proficiency for dyslexic people. It is based on Open Dyslexic project from Abelardo Gonzalez initiated in 2011 and it has been updated continually and improved based on input from other dyslexic users. From the Regular version of the original font the other styles of the family have been derived. The family consists of nine different weights, and for each weight there are nine styles, which include inclination and width, weight, slant and a custom axis Readable.
In the design investigation, Luca used a qualitative study where he combined observations, interviews, document reviews and collaborative design sessions with the dyslexic readers. These sessions focused on the dyslexics' experience with assigned readings and different prototypes of the font "Variable Open Dyslexic".
As well as implementing a user-friendly font (Open Dyslexic), Luca found it necessary to develop a website/platform concept that takes into account the other aspects/themes found (’Type Size’, ‘Contrast/colour Type, ‘Dense’ text’) and always provide users with several options so that they can customize the variable font.
The design decisions made on the web concept are based on the research he did on accessibility in web and user interaction with variable fonts and on the reading test given to the testing group.
